Gigantor (volume 1) - review

PDFPrintE-mail

gigantorvolume1palWhen I heard that Gigantor was being re-released, I immediately had serious flashbacks to my childhood. The flying garbage can is in a special place in my memories, along with Kimba and Astro Boy and The Samurai and The Phantom Agents. A serious nostalgia rush for yours truly!

Revisiting your early childhood memories can be dangerous, though. All I could really remember was some of the opening theme, and some of the characters. So, knowing that I was taking a risk, I sat down with my two teenage sons (who had never seen the show before) and bravely had another look.

Everything about the animation is now hugely dated: the minimalist movement, backgrounds and sound effects are laughable when compared to what is being done now. In fact, my sons hardly stopped laughing throughout the one episode which they managed to view. In keeping with so much early anime, the bad guys tend to be scientists who are bent on world domination. The storylines would only be of interest to anime historians. The only cool thing about Gigantor is his mohawk haircut, but even that is looking a bit 80's now.

If you are 50+ years of age and saw this show when it first aired on Australian television, or if you are an anime historian, then this is worth a look. I can't imagine any young anime fan enjoying this show, unless they are drunk and/or stoned.

Too hot for eBay!

As I was sorting through items for listing on eBay, I came across some adult product which I couldn't put there. Here is a list of those  anime products. Please be aware that you must be over 18 years of age to order any of these items from me! I only have one of each of these. They are available now for immediate delivery.

Oz anime permanent price reductions!

The good folks at Madman have announced some permanent price reductions on selected Australian anime titles. Sure, these ones have been around for a while, but saving some money is a good thing, right Smile

Some US anime titles which you might have missed

search_databaseOne of the challenges when you have a web site which contains a lot of titles is that many of the good ones tend to get buried amongst all the dross. I presently have about 1,800 US anime DVDs listed, along with about 900 Australian ones. The following list is non-hentai titles which are not available in Australia, but which I should still be able to get from the US. Happy hunting!
